CSDS 361: Intro to Audiology and Hearing Sciences

CSDS 361: Intro to Audiology and Hearing Sciences was a course required for my major that a few classmates and I made a split section out of. This class focused on the basics of audiology and how it related to the field of speech pathology. Audiograms and hearing testing were the primary focuses since both are within the scope of practice of an SLP.

A skill I learned from this course was the ability to take data, whether from a table or graph, interpret it, then apply the knowledge to determine a solution to a problem. I believe this is an important skill in any field, but especially in a science based field such a CSD.

As far as the honors aspect of this course, my peers and I were required to complete a literature review. The topic needed to be within the scope of practice of both an SLP and Audiologist. For this assignment, I chose to research the effects of age of cochlear implantation on deaf or hard of hearing children’s pragmatic development. Overall, this assignment allowed me to learn more about the Deaf community and those who choose to receive cochlear implants. It also helped me to learn about more information that will help parents who are considering cochlear implants for their children and when the best time to become implanted.

This course allowed me to strengthen my knowledge in the entire CSD field, more specifically in the audiological side of things. It also allowed me to integrate this knowledge with research.

Below is the powerpoint presentation I, Kelsey Bomar, created for this assignment on April 27th of 2021.
