Course: Biology 114 Biology for the Teaching Profession (Fall 2019)

I took the course Biology for the Teaching Profession in the 2019 Fall Semester. I knew going into this class it would be a challenge for me, because science is not my strongest area. Though science is not my area of expertise, I was excited to be taking a class that was geared towards my future teaching career.

Our labs specifically were my favorite part of this course. During our labs, we did projects that were geared towards elementary school students and could be used later in our classrooms. The highlight of this course was being able to use this lab time to teach elementary school students about biology. We were each given a topic from a list of SOL learning standards, and we created a lesson plan and activity for the students who took a field trip to Longwood University. My group had the topic of photosynthesis and the part of the plant, so I created a craft to help them remember the parts of the flower while keeping them engaged and excited. This was a great experience and I felt that I was able to take what I had learned and teach it to students in a way that was engaging and geared towards their age group.
