English 215

I enjoyed this class immensely. Dr. Tracy taught us to analyze literature in a way I hadn’t previously thought was possible. In the class, Monsters of World Literature, we would analyze texts and give our opinion, and then, a lot of the time, our opinion would be completely reversed by the end of the period. The ‘monsters’ in many stories that are vilified without any further thought are usually a result of the culture that oppressed them and turned them into something condemnable. I am including my final paper for the class in which I analyze Marie De France’s Bisclavret. My analysis of this story is a bit different than the usual realization that the antagonist isn’t as horrible as they’re made out to be. This time, it’s the realization that the antagonist is actually the character that deserves to be looked down on.
