This class was my first enhancement in the Honors program. Covering over 200 years of American literature, the class was overflowing with options for a final research project. I finally decided to do a project that would most benefit my future: creating lesson plans for the secondary classroom on reading American authors and poets.
My main focuses for this project were diversity, social issues, and technology in the secondary classroom. I first selected a wide range of American authors who discuss hard-hitting issues in their works. My 9th grade lesson plans include Langston Hughes, _______, and _________ on the subjects of the Harlem Renaissance and racism in the early 20th century. My 10th grade lesson plans include Sylvia Plath, _________, and ________ on the subjects of sexism and the struggles of womanhood. The 11th grade lesson plans observe modernist and obscure writing by _____ and _____ that hold a deeper social message. These texts were backed up by various activities that encouraged open discussion on social issues in society today. I also incorporated technology by including online visuals and audio of poetry.
