Dear Future Alex,
It’s me, Alex. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I bet for you, 2016 will feel like yesterday. To be honest, you still probably think you’re closer to the 2010s than 2020. Please tell me you’ve come around to using a calendar to remember the date, it’s getting embarrassing at this point.
Despite our forgetfulness of time, I bet you remember one specific date: August 17, 2015. The day you moved out of the home you lived in for over a decade to discover the unknown life of college. It was probably one of the most terrifying experiences that we have had so far. What if we didn’t make any friends? What if we weren’t cut out for college courses? What if we realized we couldn’t achieve our dream of becoming an English teacher? These questions tormented us for the majority of the ride to Longwood. However, our worries vanished almost the instant we arrived. Through the Honors retreat, we gained confidence in ourselves and created lasting friendships.
At this point, I’m sure you’re beginning to feel like you’re moving into college all over again. The “what if’s” begin to clutter your mind as you fear the unknown journey ahead. However, I believe you’re more prepared than ever to face your fears. I’ve gained so much self-confidence since coming to Longwood, and I keep striving towards new opportunities. I am becoming an Honors mentor to the nervous freshmen just like us and guide them towards their best selves. I’m also in the works to become a Global Leader, helping the international students during their time at Longwood. I hope that you have continued to take as many opportunities as possible to help others.
Another date comes to mind: May 2019. Your graduation. I can’t believe you’ve come this far! As silly as it seems, I want you to know that I am proud of you. You’re going to accomplish so much in these four years, and I’m positive you will do great in the “real world.” Just don’t let it go to your head, alright? Make sure to remember your humbler self from 2016 from time to time.
Sincerely,
Past Alex
