Hello, my name is Emilee and I am a senior nursing student at Longwood University. I have always loved the medical field, but it took me some time to realize that nursing was a good fit for me. Nursing has changed my life for the better and I could not see myself doing anything else. I love using the gift of nursing to help others and be there for them in some of the happiest, as well as some of the saddest points of their lives. Nursing really appeals to me because it incorporates two of my favorite things, helping others and learning.

The purpose of this portfolio is to show the wealth of knowledge that I have been provided in my English 400 Active Citizenship Writing course at Longwood University. This portfolio will exhibit the different types of projects that were completed in the course. In this course I have began to grow as a writer and particularly learned how to write as an active citizen leader. I have gained a wealth of knowledge but still have room to improve on many of the learning outcomes for this course.

Course Learning Outcomes

1) engage in the process of citizen leadership by investigating multiple perspectives on important public issues;

2) understand the nature of public discourse/debate as determined by purpose, audience, and context;

3) choose appropriate formats in writing for a variety of purposes;

4) analyze the effectiveness of their own texts and processes for specific rhetorical situations;

5) understand how the knowledge, skills, and values learned in general education are interwoven and interrelated, and how they can contribute to the process of citizen leadership.
